Today’s Theme for Day 11 of the #12daysofKollywood is Action!!!

Nothing makes you sit on the edge of your seat as a well executed, slightly logical, super fantastical action movie. This genre is where things like stunts, fight scenes and bgm all work together to pack a punch :)

Kaththi

The most recently released film on this list, Kaththi is one of my favourite Vijay action movies. Vijay is double-acting as Kathir and Jeeva, one a convict and the other a hydrologist from a small village. A social justice-y type film, one of my most favourite action scenes is the “coin fight”. This movie has some of Anirudh’s best bgm especially the Sword of Destiny and Bad Eyes theme music.  Sam and Vijay make a cute onscreen couple and I wish more of that was included. The way the happy ending is portrayed will shred you heart into pieces but in a good way.

Ko

I’ve watched this literally a million times. Starring Jiiva as a photojournalist, this film explores the relation between media and politics, and where friendship ends and true journalism kicks in. (Yes this is the one that’s getting a sequel starring Bobby Simhaa). Somehow the entire ending of the film lands in the hands of Karthika Nair’s journalist character, which shows the power of the pen (er… keyboard) over the sword. Really, really should watch this one.

Thaandavam

Probably my favourite Vikram ‘costume’ is in this film, as a blind former military man who uses echolocation (that’s right, this is a real thing too, apparently) to ‘see”… and get revenge. Has some great songs (thanks GV Prakash) and the ACTUAL BEST ON SCREEN CHEMISTRY OF ALL TIME (between Vikram and Anushka… #arrangedmarriagegoals). Just watch this one too please. (A+ usage of the five elements)

Arima Nambi

Vikram Prabhu and Priya Anand in the same movie need I say more (again, some of the Best onscreen chemistry to ever exist ft. Vikram being a dork). Though Priya plays the damsel role she isn’t forgotten halfway through the movie like action movies tend to do (*cough*Paayum Puli*cough*) and she’s quite helpful and isn’t just there for the romance (*cough*Megahmann*cough*). This was one of the first few social justice lets-take-on-some-evil-politicians Kollywood movies - there was a big wave of that kind of film after this (ft. social media). However, Arima Nambi rocks it, nothing seems too cliched. My favourite scene? The cat-and-mouse tracking game near the end of the film, it’s pretty logical and entertaining with our bad guys trying to track down our hero.

Thuppakki

I feel like everyone agrees this is probably the best Vijay action movie to exist. (Vijay-AR Murugadoss rock it). Just because our military man Jagdeesh (VIjay) is officially on holidays, doesn’t mean patriotism takes a break. A simple case of a wallet being stolen on a bus leads to Jagdeesh and his fellow military men tracking down and busting a sleeper cell group. Now its up to Jagdeesh to catch the head of the sleep cell organization before terrorism infects India’s own military. The best scene is where Jagdeesh & friends track and hunt down 12 sleepers.

Aarambam

How can you have an action movie rec list without Ajith? Here he is in one of his characters with unknown motives. Also stars Arya and Rana. The first half is our talented hacker (Arya) running into a former college mate (Nayanthara) on a flight where all he does is talk about his One True Love (Taapsee). Then they get kidnapped and held hostage by Ajith’s character. Why??? That’s the rest of the movie (hint: tragic backstory. At least one action film on here needed a tragic backstory). This film shows you the epicness that Ajith can convey just by using his presence (please see: elevator scene.)

Once you’ve seen these, you have a general idea of the different directions Kollywood action films can go. I’d also suggest Payanam, a film about a plane hijacking that shows what goes on in the minds of the hijackers, victims and rescuers. (not quite as action-y as the above films but still very engaging and you should watch it at least once). If you really love Ajith, just sit through all of his filmography (Billa, Varalaru, Aasal to name a few).

And Merry Christmas to those celebrating :)
