I mean, it’s not surprising. Women are held to stricter beauty standards than men. I guess everyone is a victim of eurocentrism but when you consider all the men and women in the film industry, women are expected to be fairer, they’re expected to be more fit, they’re expected to have “whiter” features (small noses, hairless, light eyes if possible, etc etc). And on top of that, Western women are sexualized by Bollywood. Whenever people talk about Katrina or Nargis or Amy, you hear about their ~firangi~ appeal. If you’re a woman and you come from the West, obviously you wear bikinis and have looser morals and are basically more open to being subject to the male gaze, which is essentially the point of view every film is shot from. It tells you a lot about what filmmakers expect from an actress, which is basically nothing beyond titillating the audience.
But the men are the ones who drive the box office. Obviously, they have to be home grown. If the women are just set pieces then it really doesn’t matter, does it?
