What are some films that have “strong” or “substantial” female roles in Kollywood?

south-indian-spice:

One of our own in the South Indian Cinema fandom, forestpenguin, is doing a paper for school and is trying to compile a list of Kollywood actresses that are known for taking up women-centric cinema or any character role in a film that has a substantial female part. Her paper will also consist of shadeism in the industry, lack of Tamil actresses taking up Tamil roles, and comparing past and present movie actresses. Keep in mind that the focus is the Tamil film industry

The standard for “strong female role” is a character who isn’t pushed off as just the love interest, actually has a point in the movie, has substantial dialogue, screen time, relevance to plot etc…

Below are just a few films and actresses that came to my mind, but please comment on or reblog this post if you have input!

Actresses known for heroine-centric cinema:

  • Anushka Shetty
  • Revathy
  • Sridevi
  • Ramya Krishnan
  • Shobana
  • Jyothika

Films with substantial female characters:

*I understand that many of these films are love stories centered around male characters + their love interests, but the female leads in the film also had much relevance to the plot of the film
  • Raja Rani
  • Raavanan
  • Chadramukhi
  • Vaanam
  • Kannathil Muthamittal
  • Roja
  • Moonu
  • Ghilli
  • Ayutha Ezhuthu
  • Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya
  • 36 Vayadhinile
  • Alaipayuthey
  • Neethaane En Ponvasantham
  • English Vinglish
  • Yennai Arindhaal
  • Deiva Thirumagal
  • 7am Arivu
  • Sillunu Oru Kaadhal

I found this list with some older films and this list with actresses and directors who have done women-centric cinema
