• Born on 3rd February 1938 in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu.
  
• Trained Bharatnaytyam dancer.
• Made her debut in Telugu with Jayasimha (1955).
• Was discovered by Guru Dutt and became his muse.
• She refused to change her name to something more “juicy”.
• Her popular on-screen pairings were Dev Anand and Guru Dutt, with whom she was also rumoured to have a passionate love affair.
• During the 70s she made a transition to character roles, until she took a 12 years long break from acting in 1991. 
• She was married to actor Kamaljeet during 1974-2000, the couple had two children.
• She remains one of the most acclaimed and loved actresses of Indian cinema.
