aha, you had me at chechi XD sure thing darl, here are some of my favs;
- yavainka (1982); one of the oldest and perhaps most critically acclaimed investigative thriller in indian cinema history.
- lekhayude maranam oru flash back (1983); what’s really great about this is that it’s inspired by a true story. supposedly this is a look into the death of the actress shoba who committed suicide at the age of 17 and was married to balu mahendra. mammootty unsussly plays sukumaran.
- kariyila kattu pole (1986); mohanlal, rahman, mammootty, and padmarajan- what more does one need?
- charithram (1989); this is the only movie that has scarred me (for reasons that are completely trivial in hindsight)- i was physically sick after watching it. unfortunately (or fortunately?) i can’t find a link online
- mukham (1990); somewhat a cult classic now- one of the few investigative thrillers mohanlal did
- the truth (1998); another movie with mammootty donning the investigative officer’s cap
- crime file (1999); inspired by the infamous murder case of sister abhaya
- chinthamani kolacase (2006); is it really a detective movie? not really, but it’s a hell of a watch. also, *insert every trigger warning ever*
- detective (2007); i quite like this one- it’s well built. not many people know that this was the famous jeethu joseph’s first movie.
- nadiya kollappetta rathri (2007); another in my collection of suresh gopi detective films (the last 3 also being his). kavya is MINDBLOWING. i actually read up on the kray brothers after watching this movie.
- paleri manikyam (2009); mammootty x 3. it’s very confronting but you can’t help but marvel at the excellence that is mammootty and ranjith.
- grandmaster (2012); despite it’s flaws i really like the villain in this.
- memories (2013); ah, the movie that should be considered a warning for what was to come (D R I S H Y A M). watch it for prithvi’s performance- the interval scene and ofc jeethu joseph.
- mumbai police (2013); again PRITHVIRAJ.
*notice how detective films seem to only circulate around mammootty, suresh gopi and now prithviraj*
and the not so serious detective films
- cid nazir (1971); iconic alla, athukum mela!
- kallikalam (1990); mammootty in all his various disguises- it’s really fun to watch.
- cid unnikrishnan b.a. b.ed (1994); i cry tears of laughter watching this movie. i kid you not.
- harikrishnans (1998); same as above. there’s something so legendary about the mammootty/mohanlal bromance + juhi chawla + a young chackochan.
