midukki: My favourite thing about this year has been that all...

midukki:

My favourite thing about this year has been that all of the 4 most loved female characters in Malayalam cinema have been played by some stunning, capable woman; 1 in a film discussing social anxiety and depression (the lead sporting a san-any significant makeup look), 1 in all her thick, bushy haired glory, 1 who regained self confidence when the director cast her pimples, blemishes and all, and 1 who is seemingly one of our darker skinned actresses. It’s great to see our cinema embracing the un-conventional standards of beauty and romanticising what is indeed normal. It is also important to note that this year, an actress (who just recently returned from a long acting gap and an infamous divorce) receives a remuneration almost on par to that of the two most established superstars in the industry. We’ve had some single mother characters over the year, and it’s nice to see the taboo being broken (especially the iconic- ‘she’s a mother but this isn’t her biological child *so she’s virgin*) . We’re also looking forward to our first female friendship/road trip film, due to release in a month or so. That being said, there will always be those problematic jokes, those terrible standards, and those horrible age gaps, that still persist. There is still a lack of so many things, but I do see a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep pushing on Manju Warrier, Rima Kallingal, Anjali Menon, Sandra Thomas, Aashiq Abu, Alphonse Puthren, and Vineeth Sreenivasan (among many others). There is hope for us yet!
