Movie snap reviews

ideallaedi:

I had a LONG list of movie back-logs over the summer. Have managed to watch a few. So time for snap reviews.

Hindi

1. Piku

I loved it. Really well made and all that talk about constipation was fun and not gross even for a prude like me. Amitabh was really good, Deepika was excellent, Irrfan Khan even better ! And also Mousami Chatterjee after a long time (?) on the silver screen ! But really, the characters were so well-crafted and I found myself teary eyed in parts.

Yet to see : Masaan , Bombay Velvet ,Hamari Adhuri Kahani, Bajrangi Bhaijaan (

Malayalam

1. Oru Vadakkan Selfie

I think I have higher standards when it comes to Malayalam films. So great acting, or neat screenplay or catchy music no longer maketh a great film. It does make a good film though. Oru Vadakkan Selfie slightly paled in comparison to 1983, which I watched just before and fell in love with. This one had its plot twists (and I didn’t expect the main one at all), its fair share of humour which was fun in parts and a bit … daunting in others. But once the principal characters hit Chennai, the movie picked up speed.

2. Ennum eppozhum

It was nice to see Mohanlal and Manju Warrier on screen together. And the latter’s character is so neatly etched. I loved the single mother + daughter bonding and loved the married friend’s role even more (Lena brightens up the screen!) And it was nice seeing Manju dance, wish they had showcased it more. I didn’t buy the journal office atmosphere much and the boss’s daughter was a bit .. one dimensional. But otherwise, yaay

3. Ivide

Loved it. I was a bit apprehensive because the trailer had a LOT of english (with Prithvi trying to speak Amercian) which generally means bad things. The movie indeed was more in English than Malayalam but in Shyamaprasad’s hands, it is extremely safe. Under any other director, it would have been one pretentious movie. But as it is, it is a very layered and intricate movie. Prithvi has a nice time playing a cop, but overseas. He gets his gray shades (literal and otherwise) and wears them well. Bhavana, I always love and this time around was no different. Her voice is a great asset, somehow deeper and more base than your normal heroine/dubbing artiste. Nivin gets to play the most complicated character ever. and does it brilliantly. As a psychological drama with crime throw in, it is one great experience

Telugu

1. Evade Subramanyam

Watched it without subtitles. Still loved it and that’s saying a lot since I think the dialogues were one of the strong points in this one ! Nani has excellent screen presence and superb comic timing. He really is AWESOME.The guy playing Rishi is cute too and I *have* seen him in some other movie before.. The actress is pretty, reasonably able to lip sync/act, but you can see she’s the weak link amongst the main cast, probably because of inexperience. The story is rather predictable, but the surprise is in the genteel treatment. For instance, considering that this is a movie with a trip to the Himalayas, there’s your usual “Cold, snow scene where heroine gets her extreme chills which is the cue for your hero to  …” but in this one, Nani is gentlemanly to the last drop. The heroine’s cooler and falls in love with minimal fuss, and also restrains herself with even lesser fuss.   And the great shots of the Himalayas you see on the way makes this movie worth its watch

2. S/O Sathyamurthy

MUCH FUN. The star cast was jaw droppingly long and I was afraid very much that the women might be relegated to just songs, but they were pretty much all around in the movie. For instance, Sneha and Nithya Menen .. The comedy uncles were in full form (though I missed some action cuz NO SUBTITLES) and Allu Arjun danced like a dream and bewitched everyone around him. It was more family drama than action, so it was nice to not see too many axes or sickles. And Prakash Raj is (St) Sathyamurthy, in case you were wondering

Tamil

1. Idhu Enna Maayam

Disappointing. So disappointing. I’d hoped for some realistic and heart warming  romance, instead I got a bucket full of utter bilge. Ah, Vijay, how the mighty have fallen

2. Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

I remember seeing great reviews for this one, but honestly, I couldn’t complete watching the movie. Didn’t like it much. Nope.

3. Orange Mittai

The ode to bitter sweet life was fun, and a little puzzling. As one person kept asking Vijay Sethupathi “Are you a good man or a bad one” .. But it was fun watching the now familiar faces of the gang of writers, actors from short and new-gen films.

4.  Indru netru naalai

Extremely funny Tamil science fiction. Whatte! My favourite movie amongst the rest of the ones in Tamil, definitely. Please, just watch (and don’t get put off by the first five minutes which is basically Arya in a white suit in a guest appearance with his pet dog wearing what looks like Google glasses)
