BOLLYPEDIA: Amitabh Bachchan
- born 11 October 1942 in Allahabad as Inquilab Bachchan, but later his father changed his name to Amitabh
- debuted twice: as a voice narrator in Bhuvan Shome and as an actor in Saat Hindustani in 1969
- big break came to him in 1973 with Zanjeer, which was also the first of the movies which presented him as “angry young man”
- often refered to as the biggest superstar of Indian cinema of all time
- in 1973 married actress Jaya Bhaduri with whom he has two children
- rumoured to have had numerous affairs, particularly with actresses Rekha and Parveen Babi
- retired from acting and was actively involved in politics during 1984-1987
- his comeback to movies proved unsucessful with all his films flopping badly, until Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan in 1998
- gained new film image and carved a niche for himself post 2000 as a strong patriarchal figure, with new filmmakers finding more interesting roles for him to play
- acted as a host on Kaun Banega Crorepati for several seasons
- has won and been given over 200 awards for his performances and contribution to cinema
